Create Words or Die is a word game with a timer made of lava. You stand on a shrinking platform, a ring of letters appears with a shuffle button in the middle, and every word you build out of those letters buys you a little more time. Eight players start and one is left.
It opened in October 2022 and has passed 109 million visits, with one of the best ratings of any game we have written up. How to Play Create Words or Die
There is nothing to unlock and no tutorial. You are in a round within seconds of joining.
- Join and take your spot on the platform. A server holds eight and everyone plays the same round.
- Watch the wheel appear. It is a ring of letters with a shuffle button in the middle of it.
- Build a word from those letters. Short ones count, so do not hold out for something clever.
- Send it. Every valid word buys you time while the lava keeps climbing.
- Hit shuffle when you are stuck. Seeing the same letters in a new order is the quickest way to unstick yourself.
- Keep going as the platform shrinks. The letters do not get harder, the space and the time do.
- Last one still standing takes the round, then it starts again.
Step three is where most people go wrong. A three letter word banks the same safety as a long one and takes a second to find, so the clever answer is usually the losing one.

The second room is the one worth knowing about. Pro Mode is a harder version of the same game, it costs nothing, and more than four million visits have gone through it.
It does not appear on the game page as a separate game, so plenty of players never find out it exists.
The third room is more interesting than useful. It is called Create Words or Die with the word new after it, and it has been visited eight times.
Eight visits means a room somebody is building rather than one anybody is playing. A new version of this game exists somewhere and is not finished.

That second row is unusual and worth explaining. Most games hand out a marker for arriving. This one also hands out a marker specifically for coming back the following day.
Put the two together and you get a number games almost never show you. Of the 25,226,650 people who turned up, 12,055,349 came back the next day, which is about 48 in every 100.
A similar share have had a perfect round, meaning they got every word in a level. Both figures are far higher than you might expect for a game this hard.
One thing to keep straight. All these markers were made in November 2023, and the game opened in October 2022. They count people arriving from the second year onward, not everyone who has ever played.
The Marker Nobody Has Ever Earned
The game page shows three markers. There is a fourth, and it does not appear there.
It is called Win a game, it was made on the same day as the perfect round one in November 2023, it has no description, and it is switched off.
Nobody holds it. Not one person, in nearly three years, on a game with 109 million visits.
So a marker for winning was made and then turned off before a single round awarded it. We are not going to guess at why, but it is the sort of thing that only shows up if you go looking.

The group is named after its first game, and the dates show why. Type or Die opened on 10 October 2022 and this one followed on the 22nd.
Twelve days between two games of the same shape is quick work, and a third followed a month later.
That closeness has one real consequence for players. Somebody has written a bot for the typing game and nothing at all for this one, and our Create Words or Die script page explains why the difference is not an accident.
It is also worth knowing that this game has fewer favorites than votes, at about 0.6 to one. That is the same shape as other timed skill games and the opposite of every dressing up game we have looked at.
Tips for New Create Words or Die Players
- Play the short words. Three letters banks the same time as seven and you will find it five times faster.
- Use the shuffle button early, not as a last resort. Rearranged letters read completely differently.
- Learn a handful of odd short words. Every word game has them and twenty of them beats a big vocabulary.
- Watch the lava rather than the wheel. The clock is what ends people, not the letters.
- Open Pro Mode once you are winning rounds. It is free and it is the natural next step.
- Buy the extra letter before the other pass, if you buy anything. Running out of usable letters is what ends most rounds.
