Roblox updates its client almost every week, and normally the app handles those updates on its own without you ever noticing.

But when the auto-update fails, you end up running an old version that the servers refuse to talk to. That is when the message “Your version of Roblox is out of date. Please update and try again.” appears with Error Code 280.

This one is purely a version mismatch. Your client speaks an old version of the language and the game servers only accept the newest one, so they turn you away at the door.

The fix is always some form of updating, but the tricky part is that Error Code 280 usually appears because the normal update path silently failed. Pressing Play again just repeats the same failure.

What Causes Error Code 280?

Common Causes:

Failed auto-update – The Roblox launcher tried to update itself, got interrupted, and left you stuck on the old version.
Microsoft Store version lag – The Store edition of Roblox updates on the Store’s schedule, which sometimes runs hours behind the actual release.
Corrupted installation files – Damaged files from a previous update can block every new update attempt after it.
Low storage space – On mobile devices, Roblox cannot download the update if your phone or tablet is nearly full.
Firewall blocking the updater – Security software sometimes lets the game through but blocks the separate updater process that fetches new versions.

How to Fix This Error

Restart Roblox completely

The launcher checks for new versions every time it starts, so a full restart is often all it takes to trigger the update that failed earlier.

– Close every Roblox window

– On PC, open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and end any Roblox processes still running in the background

Roblox updates need a surprising amount of free space to unpack. If your phone or tablet is close to full, the update fails silently and Error Code 280 keeps coming back.

Delete some unused apps or old videos until you have at least a couple of gigabytes free, then run the update from your app store again.

Let Roblox through your firewall

On PC, security software sometimes blocks the updater process while letting the game itself run. The result is a client that works but can never update.

– Press the Windows key and search for “Allow an app through Windows Firewall”

– Click “Change settings” and make sure every Roblox entry has both boxes ticked

– Temporarily disable third party antivirus, then restart Roblox and let it update

Re-install the Roblox app
