You crack open a storage unit, pull out a dusty old lamp, and the name comes up in rainbow letters. That is a mutation, and it just made the lamp worth a lot more than the lamp.
Mutations are the fastest way your money grows in Storage Hunters. A common item with the right mutation beats a rare item with none.
This page lists all 29 of them with their multipliers and chances. It also shows how they stack, and why the one mutation most players groan at is worth keeping.
The quick answer
There are 29 mutations in the game. 28 of them have a multiplier you can use, and they come from 5 different places.
The best one is Rainbow at 100x. The only one that makes an item worth less is Dirty at 0.8x.
The rule that matters most. Mutations multiply together. If an item has Silver (2x) and Gold (4x), you do not get 6x. You get 8x. Two good mutations on one item is the real jackpot.
Standard mutations (15)
These are the ones you find just by opening units and pulling out items. No event or machine needed.
Note that Mint sits at 1x, so it does not raise the price on its own. It does get you a tip from the customer, which is why people still like seeing it.

Washing mutations, and why Dirty is good news
Dirty is the only mutation that lowers an item’s price. It is also the only one that lets you wash an item, and washing is where the big multipliers live.
You can only wash an item that is Dirty, and you can only do it once. Washing always takes the Dirty off.
| Mutation |

Only from washing a Dirty item |
| Spotless |
3.125x |
Only from washing a Dirty item |
| Pure |
1.875x |
Only from washing a Dirty item |
It is still a gamble. A wash can come out as Pure, as Spotless, or with no washing mutation at all. Perfect is the best result. Since you only get one try per item, there is no way to reroll a bad wash.
Going from Dirty at 0.8x to Perfect at 7.5x is a 9.38x swing on the same item. So do not sell your Dirty items in a hurry.
Event mutations (6)
Weather events roll through the map and can stick a mutation on items while they are running. When the event ends, so does your chance at them.
Luck Drinks raise your chances of getting an event mutation, so save them for when the weather turns.

Farm Acid Rain. Caustic is the strongest event mutation at 22x. At 1.4% it is also more likely than Shocked (6x at 0.29%) or Firefly (5x at 0.1%), so Acid Rain wins on both counts.
Acid Rain counts as its own weather, separate from plain Rain. It can still give you the Wet mutation on top of its own two.
Time Capsule mutations (4)
Put an item in the Time Capsule and it rolls every 5 minutes until one of these four lands. Only one Time Capsule mutation goes on an item.
The middle column is your chance on any single roll. The last column is how often each one ends up being the winner, since the capsule keeps rolling until something hits.

Every roll has a 3.125% chance of ending the wait. Most of the time that means Cobwebbed, which is the weakest of the four.
Timeless at 12x is the prize, and it is only 0.8% of results. Leaving an item in the capsule longer does not improve your odds, because each roll is its own roll.
Accessory mutations
One mutation does not come from items or weather at all. Fossil at 5x only shows up if you are wearing accessories that carry a mutation chance.
How likely it is depends on the stats of what you have on, so better accessories mean better odds.

How stacking works
This is the part people get wrong. Mutation multipliers are multiplied together, not added up.
So a second mutation does not add a little. It doubles or triples whatever you already had.
| Mutations on the item |
Each multiplier |
What you actually get |
| Rainbow and Caustic |
100x and 22x |
2200x |
| Rainbow and Perfect |
100x and 7.5x |
750x |
| Secret and Timeless |
50x and 12x |
600x |
That is why a plain item with two mutations can be worth more than a rare one with a single big mutation. Check for a second name before you sell.
How the game works out an item’s price
The multiplier is only one part of the final price. Four things get multiplied together: a bonus for cheap items, your mutations, the item’s condition, and its grade.
Cheap items get a big bonus
An item worth under $1 gets its value multiplied by 25 before anything else happens. That bonus shrinks as items get pricier and disappears above $100.
So a 50 cent piece of junk is not really worth 50 cents. It starts from $12.50 once that bonus lands, and then your mutations go on top.
Condition sets a floor, not a straight cut
Condition never takes an item to zero. Each item has a floor, which is the worst it can be worth at 0% condition.
Once an item is worth 1,000 or more after mutations, that floor locks at 0.6. It can never drop below 60% of full price, no matter how battered it gets.
A worked example
Here is the game’s own example. A $400 item with no mutation, at 70% condition, graded 2-Star.
| Step |
What happens |
Result |
| Cheap item bonus |
$400 is over $100, so none |
1x |
| Floor |
Under 1,000, so it is worked out from the value |
0.39 |
| Condition |
70% condition blended with that floor |
0.817x |
| Grade |
2-Star from the Grading Store |
1.35x |
| Final price |
All four multiplied together |
$441.18 |
The item ends up worth more than its $400 base price, even at 70% condition, because the grade more than covers the condition loss.
What the numbers tell us
The mutation everyone throws away is the one to keep
Dirty is the only mutation under 1x, so it reads like bad luck. But it is the only door to washing, and washing can land Perfect at 7.5x.
That is a 9.38x swing, and it is the biggest one you control rather than roll for.
Acid Rain is the event worth waiting for
Normally the rarer thing is the better thing. Events break that rule here. Caustic is the best event multiplier at 22x and it is also more common than the top mutations from the other two events.
Compare Acid at 4.6x and 16% with Firefly at 5x and 0.1%. Almost the same multiplier, but one is 160 times more likely.
Condition costs the rich and the poor differently
A cheap item loses a bigger share of its price to bad condition. An expensive item loses a smaller share, but far more money.
| Item |
At 0% condition |
At 100% condition |
Swing |
Money lost |
| $0.50 junk item |
$3.18 |
$12.50 |
3.93x |
$9.32 |
| $400 item |
$156.00 |
$400.00 |
2.56x |
$244.00 |
| $50,000 item |
$30,000.00 |
$50,000.00 |
1.67x |
$20,000.00 |
So condition is worth fixing on your good items and worth ignoring on junk. The percentage looks scarier on cheap things and costs you almost nothing.
The Time Capsule odds add up exactly
The four chances per roll come to 3.125%, which is the number the game wiki gives for landing anything at all.
Each mutation’s share of the results matches its slice of that 3.125% too, and the four shares come to 100%. The numbers are consistent, which is a good sign they are right.
Storage Hunters mutations FAQ
How many mutations are in Storage Hunters?
There are 29 named mutations. 28 of them have a multiplier you can use, and Black is listed as one you cannot get any more.
What is the best mutation in Storage Hunters?
Rainbow at 100x is the strongest single mutation. But because mutations multiply, two smaller ones together can beat one big one.
Do mutations stack in Storage Hunters?
Yes, and they multiply rather than add. Silver and Gold on the same item give you 8x, not 6x.
Should I wash a Dirty item?
Usually yes. Dirty is 0.8x and washing can give you Pure, Spotless or Perfect at up to 7.5x. It can also give you nothing, and you only get one try per item.
What is the rarest mutation?
Firefly is the longest shot at 0.1% during the Moonlit event. Timeless from the Time Capsule ends up being only 0.8% of results.
Which event gives the best mutations?
Acid Rain. Caustic is 22x at 1.4%, which beats the best from the Rain and Moonlit events on both the multiplier and the chance.
How do I get the Fossil mutation?
Wear accessories that carry a mutation chance passive. Better accessory stats mean a better chance at it.
Do mutations affect Diamond Safes?
Yes, since version 0.4.1 on July 6, 2026. Mutations and grades on a Diamond Safe now raise how many diamonds it gives you. Before that they only changed what the safe itself was worth.
