The Trolley Game

Last Updated: September 2026  |  A famous ethics puzzle turned into a Roblox party game, and it keeps no score on purpose.

The Trolley Game is a free Roblox game about one old puzzle. A runaway trolley is about to hit five people. You can pull a lever to send it at one person instead. There is no right answer, and the game knows that. It just wants to see what you would do.

This page explains the trolley problem in plain terms, and the web game the Roblox maps are based on. It covers how a round works with six players, the kinds of choices you will face, and one thing that makes this game unusual: it keeps no record of your answers at all.

What the Trolley Problem Is

A trolley is rolling down the tracks with no brakes. Five people are tied to the track ahead and cannot move. You stand next to a lever.

Pull the lever and the trolley switches to a side track. One person is tied down there instead. Five live, one dies, and you did it.

Do nothing and five people die, but you did not cause it. Which is worse? People have argued about that for years.

The puzzle was written by an English philosopher named Philippa Foot in 1967. Another philosopher, Judith Jarvis Thomson, gave it the name “the trolley problem” in 1976.

The Web Game It Comes From

A web designer named Neal Agarwal made a browser game in 2022 called Absurd Trolley Problems. It takes that one puzzle and keeps making it stranger.

One cat or five lobsters. Five old people or one baby. A priceless painting or one person. Five clones of yourself or one stranger. Each choice is harder to laugh off than it sounds.

The Roblox game’s own description says its maps are based on that web game. It rebuilds the scenarios as places you walk through instead of pictures you click.

The choice Track A Track B
The classic one Five people tied down One person tied down
Animals One cat Five lobsters
Age Five elderly people One baby
A famous painting One person A priceless painting
Yourself One stranger Five clones of you

The table above is a sample of the kinds of choices. The game has many more, and they get odder as you go.

It Keeps No Score

Almost every Roblox game tracks something. Wins, coins, badges, a spot on a board. This one tracks nothing.

There are no badges to earn. There is no points counter and no leaderboard of who saved the most people. You make a choice, and it moves to the next map.

That is on purpose. This is a thought experiment, not a contest. Nothing is saved when you leave, so every visit starts clean.

The point is the talk that happens between the six players while everyone decides. The game only sets up the question.

How to Play The Trolley Game

  1. Join a server. You share it with up to five other players.
  2. Walk up to the tracks. A trolley is rolling toward a group of people tied down.
  3. Read both tracks. Check who or what is on each side before you touch anything.
  4. Choose. Pull the lever to switch tracks, or step back and do nothing.
  5. Watch what happens, then the game loads the next scenario.
  6. Keep going as the choices get stranger. Leave whenever you want, since nothing is saved.

The Trolley Game Gameplay

Each round is one scenario built as a small Roblox map. There are train tracks, a rolling trolley, and figures tied down on each path.

You walk up and look. You are meant to see who is on each track, because the twist is usually in the details. A sign or a label tells you what you are looking at.

Then you pick. Everyone in the server votes on the same choice. The lever is one option and doing nothing is the other, and doing nothing still counts as a choice.

After the vote the game shows the result and swaps in the next map. The early scenarios are close to the real puzzle. Later ones get absurd, matching the web game.

Rounds are short. A full run through is maybe fifteen minutes. There is no timer rushing you and no score, so the pace is set by how long your group wants to argue.

Tips for New The Trolley Game Players

  • Play with friends and talk it out. The choices are more fun when you have to defend yours.
  • Read both tracks fully before you move. The game hides twists in who is tied down.
  • There are no wrong answers. Do not stress about what other players pick.
  • Remember that doing nothing is a choice too. Some scenarios are built around that.
  • Skip the 49 Robux meme pass unless you just want to support the game. It changes nothing.
  • If you like the dilemmas, the original web game by Neal Agarwal has the full set.
