Last Updated: August 2026 | Three hidden modes the game promises and never names.
Word Search is exactly what the name says. A grid of letters appears, a handful of words are hidden inside it, and you drag across each one you spot. There is no timer and nothing to lose.
It opened in October 2022 and has taken more than 45 million visits since. This page has the three extra modes, the level each one needs, and how few players ever reach the last of them.

How to Play Word Search
There is nothing to set up and nothing to buy. The whole game is looking at a grid until the words come out of it.
- Join and start a puzzle. A grid of letters appears with a list of words to find in it.
- Drag across a word when you spot it. Words run in every direction, including backwards.
- Finish the grid to earn experience. Experience is the only thing this game counts.
- Level up to open the extra modes. Level 5, level 20 and level 50 each unlock one.
- Try the bigger grids once they open. Each mode changes the size rather than the rules.
- Play alongside other people if you like. Servers hold forty and the game suggests hunting together.
No coins, no gems and nothing to spend. Experience turns into levels, and levels turn into modes.
Word Search Gameplay: The Three Hidden Modes
Here is the useful bit. The game page promises you can unlock more gamemodes and then never says what they are.
| Mode |
Level it needs |
What the game says about it |
| Mini |
5 |
Smaller grids. The first thing the game gives you for climbing. |
| Jumbo |
20 |
The big version. The badge calls it the fun one. |
| Hardcore |
50 |
The last one. Its badge asks whether you can beat it. |
Three modes, three set levels. Each one changes the size of the grid rather than the rules, so the game grows instead of getting fiddly.
None of them cost anything. Playing is the only way in, and it is the only way anyone has ever got in.
The Same Wall, Twice
Four badges mark how far people get, and the shape of the drop is unusual.
| Milestone |
Players who reached it |
Share of the ones before |
| Finished a first puzzle |
8,249,844 |
Everyone. This is the number the rest are measured against. |
| Reached level 5 |
2,033,195 |
About 25 in 100 of the players above. |
| Reached level 20 |
62,549 |
About 3 in 100 of the level 5 players. |
| Reached level 50 |
2,176 |
About 3 in 100 of the level 20 players. |
Look at the bottom two rows. About 3 in every 100 players who reach level 5 go on to reach level 20.
Then the same thing happens again. About 3 in every 100 of the level 20 players ever reach level 50.
Most games have one hard step and then ease off. This one repeats the same steep climb, so jumbo mode is about as far from mini mode as hardcore is from jumbo.
The end result is that 2,176 players have ever seen hardcore mode, out of more than eight million who finished a puzzle. That is about one in 3,800.

Played by Millions, Saved by Hardly Anyone
Only 108,623 players have saved this game to come back to, which is one every 416 visits.
Put that next to two other puzzle games of about the same size and the gap is startling. One of them collects a save every 47 visits and another every 9.
Nothing about that says one game is better than another. People save a place they mean to browse and simply play a puzzle when it turns up.
A visit here lasts about six minutes, which is a puzzle or two. That fits a game people drop into rather than settle in for.
Thirty-One Games From One Person
The creator has more than thirty games out, and two of them hold almost all the visits. This is the second biggest.
Twenty-one of the others have fewer than 11,000 visits each. There is a hangman game, a plinko game, a maze, an obby and several things that never went anywhere.
Their profile says they like making games that are relaxing and help people cope with life. Their most played game is about destroying things, so both halves of that list are real.
Tips for New Word Search Players
- Check backwards and diagonally. Words run in every direction here, and the ones people miss are almost always upside down.
- Hunt one letter, not one word. Pick the rarest letter in a word and sweep the grid for it rather than reading every line.
- Aim for level 5 first. It is the cheapest unlock in the game and about a quarter of players manage it.
- Do not expect level 20 quickly. Only about 3 in 100 players who reach level 5 ever get there, so it is a long climb.
- Do not go looking for codes. There are none, and every mode opens by playing anyway.
- Take it in short sittings. An average visit is about six minutes, which is roughly what this kind of puzzle is built for.
Word Search FAQ
What are the extra modes?
Mini at level 5, jumbo at level 20 and hardcore at level 50. Each changes the size of the grid.
How do I unlock them?
By levelling up. Finishing puzzles earns experience, experience makes levels, and the modes open at set levels.
Are there any codes?
No, and there never have been. Our Word Search codes page explains why there is nowhere to type one.
Are there working scripts?
No. Our Word Search script page explains why the two biggest results turn out to be the same hidden file.
How hard is hardcore mode to reach?
Very. Out of more than eight million players who finished a puzzle, 2,176 have reached level 50.
How many people can play together?
Forty to a server, which is far more than most puzzle games allow. Private servers are switched off.
Is it still being updated?
No. The last update landed in October 2024, though the game still runs and people are still in it.
About Word Search
Word Search comes from one person rather than a studio, and it is one of two games of theirs that ever got big.
Its busiest moment was 3 November 2024, when 1,250 people were playing at once. That was two weeks after the final update.
Everything happens in one room. There are no other places to visit and nothing hidden behind a door.
It has not changed in nearly two years and it does not need to. A grid of letters works the same way it always did.
